Victoria BenschLassie has nothing on a Queensland heeler named Blue. That’s because Blue is being credited by police for helping save the life of a lost 3-year old girl. The NY Daily News reports.

Little Victoria Bensch happened to wander away from her Cordes Lakes, Arizona hom on Thursday. With vast mountains surrounding the valley, a search party scoured through the night trying to rescue the girl as local temperatures dropped below 30 degrees. Fifteen hours after she got lost, a rescue helicopter spotted her in a dry creek bed and saved her.

Even Dogs Don’t Like Kevin Federline

February 23, 2010

K-FedPoor Kevin Federline. The ex-husband of pop superstar Britney Spears has been a punching bag of sort over the years by the general public. Whether it be for his failed rapping career or other questionable antics, he has only had to fend off attacks from humans thus far. Well that changed recently as the D-lister was attacked by dogs in front of millions of television viewers.

Fortunately for Kevin, it’s not as bad as it sounds. The dogs were muzzled and props in a recent episode of Celebrity Fit Club on VH1. In an activity designed to get Federline to shed a few pounds, he was put in an obstacle course. If K-Fed was able to reach the gate in time, he could have locked the dogs in and avoided the encounter. Unfortunately, the gate wasn’t locked in time and a terrified Federline cowered in the corner as the dogs jumped at him with not-so-friendly growls.

Cesar Millan’s Pit Bulls Passes Away

February 21, 2010

Cesar Millan with Pit Bull DaddyIf you’ve ever watched an episode of the Dog Whisperer, there’s a good chance you saw Cesar Millan’s sidekick Daddy. The loyal, well-behaved pit bull was not only a friend of Cesar, but a key character on the popular National Geographic Channel show and appeared on over 50 episodes. He died peacefully on Friday, February 19th in front of family at the age of 16 years old.

Daddy lived a rich life and helped create a healthy environment by calming some of the most troubled dogs. His balanced demeanor was essential in assisting Cesar in these interactions. Perhaps his most important contribution was way he became an ambassador of sorts for Pit Bulls. His gentle and loving nature showed the side of this breed that is often overlooked by society. He showed the public that Pit Bulls are not the killers that they are portrayed to be, but loving companions.

West Hollywood Takes Stand Against Sales of Dogs

February 18, 2010

West Hollywood Dog BanThose cute scenes where doggies are placed in a store window for sale may be over in West Hollywood, California. That’s because the city is set to approve an ordinance that would ban the sales of cats and dogs. This is a direct stab at puppy mills that promote inhumane breeding conditions. KTLA provides a report.

The ordinance is nothing new in the State of California. South Lake Tahoe adopted one last year and other cities have looked hard at placing bans on the selling dogs as well. The city is also no stranger to pet friendly laws as they banned the practice of cat declawing back in 2003.

Mattel Wants Your Dog on Twitter

February 15, 2010

Puppy Tweets by Mattel
We know many online like to setup a Twitter account for their pets and make cute posts on their behalf. But now your dog can actually make those tweets on their own thanks to a “revolutionary” new dog collar from Mattel. The aptly named Puppy Tweets is a high-tech gadget that lets your dog update the world through a sound and motion sensor.

The device works by hooking a plastic tag to your dog’s collar. Then plugging in a USB receiver to your computer that is connected to the internet. There is some software to install and of course you’ll need to create a Twitter account. When your dog is in range of the receiver, the page will update with one of 500 randomly generated Tweets whenever they move or bark.

Brooklyn Dog Left in the Cold Thanks to Mugger

February 12, 2010

Brooklyn Dog MuggerWhen walking through any major city you have to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your possesions. But your dog’s possesions? As improbable as it sounds, a cute Westie named Lexie from the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn had her coat stolen from her behind the owner’s back the other night. Yes, that’s right, someone mugged a dog of their coat in the Winter. What kind of person does that?

‘Who Dat’ Dog Waits to Cheer on Saints

February 5, 2010

Who Dat? DogWith all the hoopla and pageantry surrounding the upcoming Super Bowl, a little beagle named Jerry from outside New Orleans is getting a whole lot of special attention. You see, Jerry has a special talent. As WDSU reports, Jerry can lead the Saints rallying cry of “Who Dat” during their games. Jerry’s owners recorded this on Sunday and put it up on YouTube not expecting much attention outside of a few friends. To their surprise, he was a huge hit and has become a bit of a mini internet superstar.

Puppy Bowl VI Live This Sunday

February 4, 2010

Puppy Bowl VIAnother year has passed and everyone is gearing up for the big game this Sunday. Both sides have worked hard and are ready to hit the gridiron. I’m not talking about the Super Bowl, but the other game in town. The 6th Annual Puppy Bowl broadcast live on Animal Planet this Sunday from 3-5pm e/p.

For those who have yet to see a Puppy Bowl take place, it’s an entertaining couple hours of puppies running around and playing together in a room dressed up like a football stadium (or as they call it, Animal Planet Stadium). They crash into each other, chew on toys, and just act like rambuctuous pups for a couple hours. They have instant replays and a water bowl camera that gets you right into the action. Apparently we’re going to be seeing the addition of a blimp hovering over the field. Feline lovers will also enjoy the kitty halftime show put on by a bunch of cats that seem to have gotten a nice batch of catnip before the performance.

Debarking Dogs: Inhumane or Practical?

February 3, 2010

Debarking DogsWhile cruising through the daily topics that were getting attention on Twitter, I came across an interesting front page article from the New York Times on the practice of debarking dogs. This was a rather foreign topic to me and it was fascinating to read the various view points on the issue.

At first glance, debarking sounds cruel. You’re putting an animal through an invasive surgical procedure to remove their vocal chords and take away one of their most primal functions. While a human can understand why they can’t speak and how to work around it, a dog just doesn’t have that mental capacity. They just know that one day they could bark and the next they couldn’t. That we are taking an important piece from a dog for our personal convenience.
